Sisak

Love is something that I cannot define perfectly. It can just be a feeling, an impression or it could be your whole life. You have no control over whom you love. We can feel attraction towards anybody.

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code has criminalised homosexual sex. In 2013, after the Supreme Court reinstated Section 377, Faraz Arif Ansari came up with a plot of short movie based on homosexual love.

Sisak, a twenty minute  short movie,  follows two young men of Mumbai (Jitin Gulati and Dhruv Singhal) who take the same local train  home every day. As the film progresses, the shy and reticent men gravitate close enough to say something to each other, but they cannot muster the courage to open their mouths. The story can be seen as an allegory on Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Supreme Court order sent Indian queer’s back in the closet. Meanwhile Ansari was also struggling as every production house rejected the story. Funding was also a problem so Ansari used his own savings to produce the film. Post-produced fundings were crowd sourced by online platform, Wishberry. Sonan Kapoor promoted the film on twitter in January.

Sisak is India’s first Silent LGBTQ themed story. It will only be displayed in film festivals. The film raised 4.15 lakh from fundings on Wishberry.

  1. Whether it’s men, women—it doesn’t really matter. The human race is filled with passion. And to coin terms like heterosexuality, homosexuality or even bisexuality makes no sense to me. You are human. You love who you love. That should be enough—no labels. No stigmas. Nothing. Just be to be. But life isn’t that kind. People will always find things to hate.
